Red Dragon Peter Wright Snakebite Rainbow Mamba Steel Tip Darts - 24gms - D1399
Not much more can be said about Peter Wright's quest for the perfect set of darts. We fully understand his strive and ambition for perfection - and amazingly he thinks he's found it in these Mamba 16 darts. When looking at the Euro 11 darts you could see Peters swagger on stage, the steal in his eyes but too him they needed too many set up changes in varying conditions, so we set about building his latest set based on the principles of the Euro 11 darts.
Peter went away determined to push us to the limit of meeting his exacting standards, he wanted a grip that was more aggressive yet subtle so that it didn't stick in his hand. The length dimensions and balance had to meet his Euro 11's in every way - and yet still there was a final caveat they must look simply amazing and reflect the very essence of his personality on stage - so enter the Mamba 16's Engineered using our multi- milled tri directional technology, the triple groove pattern of rings, buttress and bespoke DeltaTech was exactly what Peter was after.
Peter said "It's hard to explain to everyone out there just how much my desire I have to keep improving and win at the absolute highest level. This challenge was sop in-depth that I felt that we may fall short. However, the smile on my face when I first held these darts was everything I needed to know. My original set was in 24g and these went so well that I was blown away - I've since swapped to a 22g version as I find this works better at events and on TV than it does back home in my practice room. I'm so convinced by these darts that I even bet the guys they won't be making me another set for another year at least!" Whilst Peter throws dart like we can only dream you can get the best from his desire, dedication and passion to make the perfect set of darts, and the ones to date that most closely match his unbridled spirt and passion for the game. Snakebite Mamba 16 Obscenely good so said Peter Wright.

These are not a new design, and are similar to the Snakebite Green Mamba, Mamba 2 and the Snakebite Lunar edition. The basic specifications are the same; however the Mamba 2 and Snakebite Lunar Edition have different nose designs.
Many people who have ventured down the path of using the “standard” Snakebite darts complain that the dart is “too long”, “too thin” or some other trifling reason they can’t throw them.
I have a different issue, for me on the original snakebite barrels I find the original points are too short.
Historically I’ve played with many of the Snakebite darts that have the 54.6mm long barrels in 20g, 21g, 22g and now 24g and like many other players have had issues adapting to the longer barrels of the Snakebite range, my issues are compounded by the fact I prefer longer points.
In all honesty if you like pencil shaped barrels this is a series of darts that are worth spending a bit of time on to make them suit your style by tuning them to your needs.
The first and biggest hurdle will be changing the points.
On Red Dragon Darts the point diameter is larger than any other dart point made by any manufacturer. So, it’s a case of finding a Red Dragon or Winmau point that suits your needs or finding another brand of point that isn’t ridiculously loose in your new best darts.
Red Dragon points are around 2.377mm in diameter the closest to this is the Target Storm Point at 2.373mm or Winmau Knurled points at 2.415mm. The only alternative is to add Loctite or Super Glue to hold smaller diameter points in place where there is no interference fit.
The next tuning step is to compare the barrel / shaft length to the darts you are replacing or upgrading from (if that’s the case) and replace the usual Long Nitro Tech shafts with whatever you find works.
Once you have everything the way you want it it’s time to throw and tweak. I know for a lot of people I might sound like I’m teaching you how to suck eggs, but it’s not my goal.
A lot of people accumulate sets of darts they can’t successfully throw they either put them in a drawer or sell them for next to nothing. Put your knowledge to use and tweak or tune your darts, sometimes it’s not you, it’s your set up.
OK, so back to the review, I changed the points and experimented with different shafts.
I finally found and used a short nylon/carbon shaft that suited my way of holding and throwing these darts.
The longer style barrel requires a rethinking of the way the Mamba barrel is held. It’s also made a heap easier by the positioning of the two grip sections. I am really a natural rear gripper and these barrels lend themselves to my way of holding the darts and the fact that the rear grip section is larger. The grip can easily be repeated on each dart as they are thrown.
The barrel make up is simple, a bull nose that it part of a plain forward section that is 8mm long.
The front grip section is approximately 10mm long comprised of a compact shark grip with 6 axial cuts or Mamba Grip; this is followed by a 9mm plain section punctuated by 3 shallow, narrow rings. The rear grip section is a repeat of the front section only this time 16mm long followed by 11.6mm of plain barrel with both the Red Dragon logo and the Snakebite logo.
Out of the box I was having all sorts of issues with grip, balance and throwing these darts.
By incorporating a few simple changes to the set up they now suit me and the way I throw.
The grip would be rated at 2.5 out of 5.0, not at all extreme but positive. As an overall proposition, they are not the latest style of Snakebite dart available so the price has dropped over time.
