Winmau Sniper 23 gram Steel Tip DartsFriday, December 10th, 2021 - The Darts Collector
This is not a new style of barrel and the 22 & 23g versions form the basis of the barrel style Simon Whitlock throws. This is predominantly identified by the large scallop cut into the rear third of the barrel.
This is a rear weighted barrel, with a grip profile that runs literally end to end.
The first third of the barrel is basically a massive nose taper, punctuated by two square cut grooves just to the rear of centre; otherwise the front third is smooth.
This is then followed by twin shark grip cuts and a smooth section that ends at the beginning of the scallop. The scallop is actually quite deep but misleadingly shorter than it appears in images, after the scallop the barrel tapers away to meet the stem, with 10 fine grooves cut into the short area. The barrel is finished in natural Tungsten tones.
The barrel looks very aggressive in its design, and the lines are much sharper than its 22g brother that is covered in grooves with a less severe scallop.
For the look achieved, they are only 48.4mm long and 7.6mm in diameter at their widest point. The barrels are noted as being speciality shape and I’ll point out again they are REAR weighted.
They are shipped with Prism Force medium shafts and Prism Alpha Standard extra flights the darts are in a standard round Winmau point protector.
I was really impressed with these straight out of the box. Like a lot of people I like to get the feel of the barrel before I go to the board. The scallop is perfectly placed to use as a grip marker. I really liked the barrel length, not overly long and the look is accentuated by the standard length black points, the multiple grip points allow the player to avoid any kind of slippage in grip or release.
At the Oche, the first few throws were right on target, but as the session continued the rear weight characteristics and my forward grip action clashed, to a point where I was so frustrated with the results in the board I had to walk away. I loved everything about these darts, but they hated my inability to maintain a rear grip throw. It explains a lot though, I have had the same results with all the modern Whitlock’s, that’s why they are on display and not in the arsenal!
These barrels have all the attributes that players look for – Style, grip, balance but I just could not deal with the rear balance aspect.
Nice darts just not for me 3.5 out of 5 Stars
