Unicorn Pro-Tech Style 3 21 gram Darts
Saturday, March 18th, 2023 - The Darts CollectorWhen I saw that the Pro-Tech range of darts were being released I asked that I could review a few different styles.
The Style 3 was the first to arrive.
At first the barrels appear nothing out of the ordinary, 50.3mm long, 6.4mm at the widest point in a standard pencil configuration with a mildly tapered nose.
The barrel is grip from end to end, in four zones, each separated by a ringed section. What could be described as the real nose of the barrel of the dart is about 3mm long and starts at a touch over 4mm in diameter, over the first 3mm of the barrel it increases in diameter via a chamfer and mild taper to approximately 5.5mm, where it becomes the forward shark grip section for 6mm, after which the first 5mm section of narrow ring grip makes its first of three appearances.
Each of the ring grip sections is followed by a shark grip section, although these three also contain lineal or axial grooves, twelve on each band. The last 5mm are plain containing the Unicorn trade mark.
The three groups of ring grooves are coloured gold, to me, a tasteful attempt to lift the finish quality.
The darts are fitted with silver Volute points, supplied with two tone Grippers 4 shafts and black Pro-Tech Ultra Fly flights.
Supplied assembled in Unicorn’s updated packaging presentation is very well executed.
The package is easily opened and the darts quickly retrieved without any drama or damage to the packaging.
The first thing I noticed was the feel of the barrels. The grooves feel like they grab your skin albeit very lightly. Maintaining a very light grip on the barrel and trying to slide your thumb along the its length is almost impossible the grip on the barrel is that positive.
Taking them to the board, the first few throws are to test the grip required to throw the darts or more to the point how gently to hold them to achieve a smooth release.
Surprisingly, even though the grip on the darts appears to be aggressive, by altering the strength you hold them with, its not hard to modify the throw and release needed to achieve accuracy in the following throws. It took only a few throws to really get accustomed to the darts, although in a subconscious way one always starts to hold the barrels more firmly than is really needed.
The grip on these would really suit someone looking for a grippier barrel, the grip itself would rate a 3.75 to 4.0 out of 5.0.
This is a great set and, I really look forward to comparing these with any of the other 4 styles of Pro-Tech sometime in the future.
Given that these are a little bit of a niche line, and won’t be everyone’s cup of tea I’d rate them at 4.25 out of 5. If you’re looking for something a little bit different these are worth a look!
