Unicorn Noir Michael Smith 22 gram DartsSaturday, May 28th, 2022 - The Darts Collector
Michael Smith is one of my favourite players in the PDC. He is an imposing figure but there have always been questions about his ability to close out under pressure.
He is an imposing figure not one known for his grunting, posing and posturing, a player who started 2022 on a definite high, let’s hope he can keep it up!
The Unicorn Michael Smith Noir come as a well presented premium set of darts.
The fold open style case is protected in a slip cover and the inner and outer both primarily black with matte silver print.
Removing the slip cover and opening the box, one is presented with, on the left a pocket containing a card which on one side gives a brief player biography, and on the other provides an overview of the darts themselves.
On the right or in the bottom of the box is what we are eagerly awaiting, The Michael Smith Noir. Removing the protective foam panel the assembled darts are revealed, and they look pretty darn good to me, eye candy material and well presented at that.
The Barrels themselves at first glance, appear to be black with silver (natural tungsten) highlights where the grip rings have been machined in. closer examination show that this is the case on the middle and rear of the dart but, on the front ring set its actually reversed the barrel rings are silver and the base of the rings are black, a clever touch.
The barrels are 49.6mm long with black standard points, and a tiny 6.3mm in diameter. The barrels are parallel or pencil shaped.
Just a quick word about the colour, the Noir obviously refers to the black colouring of the darts. In this case however the titanium nitride coating used on the darts in some lighting is almost a black chrome effect, definitely not a flat black affair like some.
The nose of the dart is a rounded or radius style and has 2 rings cut into it the root of the rings are natural and the barrel surface is black. The first grip section is about 10mm long and as I said earlier the colour distribution is reversed Black root and Natural outer.
From here the barrels resume the traditional black with silver machine highlights following the same grip design of all Michael Smith 90% Darts.
The darts themselves feel really nice in the hand, and even though the coating gives off a nice sheen the 3 point ring grips provide plenty of finger hold.
The darts are equipped with Gripper 4 Mirage midi shafts and Ultrafly Noir Organic flights.
The completed package looks great but I’m not a fan of the shafts and not really certain about the flights.
For me the flights kept popping out of the shafts and on closer inspection I noted that the shafts were actually off centre when the dart was rotated on its point axis.
I mean you can call it nit picking but when you’re paying good money for a set like this you want them to be right.
So at the Oche straight out of the box the darts fly perfectly for my preference I found that the entry angle into the board was greatly reduced with a shorter shaft. They were a very playable set either way. That said this is such a nice looking set it’d be a set that is perfect for a collection, they look way too nice to knock around.
The Ultrafly flights are a new design for me and looked a bit like a No6 that had been inserted backwards, my biggest concern would be their longevity, they do look a bit light.
The grip isn’t over the top and sits at about 2 – 2.5 out of 5.
The darts themselves I really liked, I really struggled to decide on a score, but I’d rate the package as a 4 out of 5. I would have rated them a bit higher but I think that a great presentation set was let down but poor quality accessories in the form of the shafts.
