Target Leighton Bennett 20 gram Steel Tip DartsSunday, January 2nd, 2022 - The Darts Collector
Leighton Bennett was born on 31/12/2005.
At the point of reviewing these darts, Leighton Bennett is the grand old age of 15years 11months and I might add a Professional Dart player in the PDC!
I first heard of Leighton Bennett when he beat Phil Taylor in an exhibition match in June 2019, after Taylor had retired from the professional ranks.
I have only seen him play in online videos, it’s a difficult style to describe without sounding critical of a player who has so much ability, so I would recommend that you watch this guy in action and look at his playing style, and see the ability he has at such a young age.
The Leighton Bennett darts by Target are the exact darts that he plays with in all the videos I’ve seen.
While they look longer, the barrels are 50.8 mm long, and a mere 6.1mm in diameter.
The nose of the dart is almost a perfect 6.1mm radius and is just under 6mm long, it is followed by 7mm of grip in the form of 5 grooves, square cut at the base and tapering in at the top, but not quite to a point leaving a rounded peak. The first grip section is followed by a plain section but, not square cut the resulting surface is again rounded and immediately followed by another 8 grooves identical to the first strip. The next section is a plain, smooth ring 6mm long, followed by another 10 grooves the same as the first two bands. The shaft end of the barrel is completed with 9.5mm of smooth tungsten with the Target logo etched on the surface.
The grip is perfectly placed to give a positive surface to hold the dart when throwing, while the grip itself isn’t aggressive, it’s positive and most player finger placements will definitely contact the grip avoiding any slippage at all.
Like most silver darts these are fitted with a very shiny but slippery point that should be scuffed or changed for grip points. The darts out of the packet are fitted with Medium white pro grip shafts; I actually got the best results by changing them to short shafts (my preference). The supplied flights are in the Leighton Boom Boom Bennett theme and blue and yellow but in a comic book style.
At the Oche, this is a set of darts that just keep giving I was really surprised at the results I got straight out of the box, the 20g version is a very thin (6.1mm) barrel, but great to throw with. The 22g is only a little thicker at 6.35 and I would imagine leaves just as much space in a treble or bulls eye for multiple hits. Out of the box these feel really well balance and don’t require a great deal of force behind them to get the best results. I really enjoyed throwing them, I tuned them while I practiced with them and in this case, I found they went best with a short shaft and a Ten-x flight.
I’d likely score the grip as a 2 – 2.5 out of 5, not finger rippers but a really nice, positive grip.
I am leaning toward lighter sets recently, having moved back from 23g to 20 or 21g as my preferences. I enjoyed everything about them, look, feel, the way they fly , the balance and the ease at which my throw adjusted to the dart, they were easy to get used to !
I’d rate them as 4.5 out of 5. Probably an underrated set because of the young age of the player, but don’t let that put you off as they are really nice to throw.
