Saturday, November 5th, 2022 - The Darts CollectorKnow I bang on about some of the darts that are available.
This is another set that isn’t exactly a new sensation, they’ve been around a while and again in my humble opinion these are above average.
They arrived in the standard Red Dragon packaging with a top or bottom slip out tray. The darts come with the shafts inserted and the flights are flat packed. The first thing that caught my eye when I unpacked them was actually the flights!
There’s just something that really stands out on a fairly plain red and black coloured flight.
The darts are a little bit unusual in their design, having a bulbous front end, it’s shaped a bit like a football, tapering up to the maximum diameter and then down again over around the first 20mm of their 50mm length. They’re described by Red Dragon as a scalloped barrel, but I didn’t feel it let alone see it. The grip itself is a series of rings cut into the length of the barrel leaving a short plain section at the shaft end that shows the RD logo.
They come equipped with a set of long black aluminium shafts and the aforementioned flights a really nice-looking set of darts when assembled. At this point I really need to mention my pet peeve, aluminium shafts absolutely need to have ‘O’ rings installed, these were bare and needed tightening every throw, a small thing that can be distracting and annoying.
I throw firmly and with the set up out of the pack the darts throw easily and fly really well. My pull back action though, causes me to constantly hit my cheek with the flights. For me, I tried a few different lengths of shafts eventually settling in a short set of Nitrotech shafts.
At the Oche, throwing these was great fun, I usually play with a thinner parallel barrel but, once I adapted my grip to these barrels they are a sensational dart to play with.
From the release, it’s clear that using the bulb as the push point there is almost zero directional deviation, and even though the barrels are front loaded if thrown firmly there is no abrupt drop away as they reach the board. It doesn’t take long before they are regularly on target and I’m hitting what I’m throwing at.
Through all the practice drills there were no unexpected out comes the darts flew straight.
They are fitted with standard length black points that seem to hold in the dartboard really positively. Even being a little out of left field these darts represent good value for money. While the grip probably only rates at 2 out of 5 it’s still positive.
I really enjoyed these darts and given how easy they are to tune to my throw, I would classify them as all-rounders. It’s a shame they are usually overlooked in my opinion as a package they rate 4 to 4.5 out of 5, another great set from Red Dragon.
