Red Dragon Dragonfly 3 20 gram Darts
Tuesday, August 23rd, 2022 - The Darts CollectorI purchased these as a practice set for home. I normally play with the longer style Euro 11 in 20g.
I noticed these when I was browsing online a while ago and, while they are nothing like the Euro 11 visually I thought they’d be worth a try given that even after a few months with the Euros I would still have length issues periodically where I’d get my grip wrong.
The Dragonfly 3 is really a dart that just blends into the background.
It’s a straight barrelled dart with 13 rings cut into the forward section. The rings alternate in width, narrower than 1mm and approximately 1mm wide, followed by a plain section about 10mm long and then 3 alternating rings at the rear.
They are 48.3mm long and 6.2mm in diameter the nose is just a radius cut on the front of the barrel.
The rings are filled black and the barrel is fitted with a plain black point.
The darts come with medium Nitrotech shafts and random Hardcore extra thick flights. They are 95% Tungsten and its actually noticeable, they have a really small profile and in the hand feel misleadingly heavier than their 20g.
I keep on about the length of shafts that are supplied with darts and I have to say, while I like the short Nitro tech shafts, the mediums shafts in general are becoming a pet hate with me. I don’t think I’ve ever used a shaft longer than an in-between length and even then reluctantly because I couldn’t get a short shaft.
I tried to throw them with a medium shaft but it only took a few minutes and I was unscrewing them and swapping them out for something more familiar. I was pretty happy with the results all round but eventually settled on a set of Power Titanium Shafts that were not being used.
I don’t know what it was but likely the, balancing out of the barrel weight in my grip but with this configuration they were sensational. Straight and true, no wobble or deviation. Given that I’d played with them for less than an hour they were hitting the mark regularly.
The grip is subtle and would only rate 2 out of 5 but they are comfortable in the hand.
I said at the outset that they were a set that blended into the background, clearly a design that has been around for a while and is similar to many other Red Dragon designs. They are a great set and the price point for a 95% Tungsten Dart represents outstanding value!
This is probably a set of darts that is overlooked because of dart snobbery, they are not cool, they don’t have a player’s name on them and they are relatively inexpensive for a 95% tungsten set of dart. Try them, I loved them and so would most players use straight barrel darts.
Overall 4.5 out of 5 based on quality and value for money alone.
Well done Red Dragon.
