Pentathlon TDP Model 5 22 gram Darts
Friday, January 14th, 2022 - The Darts CollectorOver the years Pentathlon was a brand that I personally related more to dart flights than anything else.
I am reviewing a set of Pentathlon TDP model 5 darts 22g.
It’s not a brand that I am very familiar with, although they clearly look like a quality product.
They arrived in a plain silver grey coloured package with a black liner containing the darts in a point protector with black & green shafts inserted and a set of matching dart flights.
Out of the pack they are a very eye catching design.
The barrel length is almost 55mm long and 6.4mm at its widest point. The barrel weight is 22.10, 22.07 & 22.08g.
The barrels are also intricately machined and the barrel has 4 primary areas
The nose is a 6mm long elliptical shape with 6 tear drop shaped indents, followed by 3 1 x 1mm square cut grooves.
This is followed by an 11mm long section adorned with 6 diagonally radial cut grooves. This in punctuated by a 1 x 1 square cut groove, then a 9mm smooth strip that has the Pentathlon Logo laser etched and also has 8 equally spaced divots on either side of the logo, finishing again with a 1 x 1 groove.
The final 24mm of the barrel starts with 4 x 0.5mm square cut grooves and a Scallop that begins with the 4 grooves and ends with 4 identical grooves and a 2mm long parallel section at the shaft end. The scallop is 5.1mm at its narrowest point.
The dart presents a long but very interesting profile.
The length of the barrel usually throws me as I have difficulty throwing longer barrels, that said I didn’t have quite the same impact with these. Likely because the centre of balance is moved forward because of the scallop at the rear. The purpose of the scallop it either to create a front loaded effect or to provide a grip point for players who grip the rear of the barrel. Although they look longer the points are 25mm.
At the Oche they appear well balance and were easy to adapt to the standard points just needed to be scuffed to ensure no drop outs.
I actually changed the shafts to a short version and managed to get a more consistent trajectory without the dart dipping or dropping when it reached the board.
Even though I enjoyed throwing the darts I felt that they were still too long for my grip and style of throw.
The grip was ’different’ and would only rate as a 1.5-2 out of 5. With the scallop at the rear being smooth there was definitely a chance of slip there, although I found that I was gripping on the rings to the front of the scalloped section. I could throw these without issue but for my taste the barrel was too busy and had too many different sensations on offer.
I just didn’t like them, too unconventional for my taste in darts. That said the wife grabbed them as soon as I put them down and she absolutely loves them.
3/5 from me but a higher score from her.
