Harrows Wolfram 23 gram Steel Tip Darts
Saturday, December 18th, 2021 - The Darts CollectorWolfram is the chemical name for the element Tungsten its chemical symbol on the periodic table is W and its atomic number is 74. It is a rare, dense metal and has a number of interesting properties.
Fun Science facts: did you know Tungsten has the highest melting point of all the known elements 3,422 degrees Celsius; it also has the highest boiling point at 5,930 degrees Celsius. It has a density of 19.25grams per cubic centimetre similar to Gold or uranium and about 1.7 times as dense as lead!
So what has that got to do with darts? Heaps, the higher the tungsten content in a dart the denser the alloy, that means the barrels can be made thinner and shorter than traditional brass darts and thus the reason the lower the Tungsten content the bigger the barrels are!
Let’s face it at the end of the day what you throw is a matter of personal choice, but the slimmer the barrels the more room in the trebles or bull.
Of all the Harrows designs of the last decade, this would be one of my all-time favourites.
The barrel is a standard 50mm long; the front grip comprises 7 double cut grooves that are about 0.5mm deep, the rear section is a series of 15 x 0.5mm wide x 0.5mm deep square cut grooves.
The grip sections are approximately 22mm at the front, separated by a 8mm smooth centre section, and the rear grip is approximately 14mm long and finished at the shaft end with a 5 mm smooth section.
The darts are listed as being rear loaded; it can only be marginal and even then with metal shafts. Given the pub test I used the balance is pretty much in the centre. Each barrel is hallmarked with the Wolf’s head on the centre band with its weight, the Harrows logo on the end section.
The barrels are very sleek and at their widest point are only 6.5mm in diameter. In all images I’ve seen the taper on the nose of the dart stands out more than it does in real life.
Like many Harrows darts they are shipped with a set of long shafts and flights that are part of the stylised packaging the also come with a standard black hard case.
This is a set of darts that are really exemplary in every way. The size of the dart is misleading, once in hand these tiny barrels feel heavier than they should but it’s an illusion that is part of the density of the metal.
At the Oche, well it took me a bit of fiddling with shafts and flights to get them the way I like them, in the end it was short shafts and kite shaped flights that did the trick. At 23g they are toward the top end of my preferred weights but they were not a burden at all! They are a precisely balanced set of darts by reducing the drag and throwing with measured force they performed well on my board, I was consistently hitting my target. The grip is positive but not grippy in any way, providing a surface for a clean push off when throwing and definitely not a surface that would cause a miss-throw.
This is a conservative looking set, not over styled, not painted or coloured but a truly beautiful set of darts. 4.5 Stars for me!
