Elkadart Black Mamba 22 gram Steel Tip Darts
Tuesday, May 24th, 2022 - The Darts CollectorThe Black Mamba design has been around for a while.
This is an 80% Tungsten set of darts, which doesn’t detract from the practicality of the package.
The barrels are 45.5mm long and 7.2mm in diameter.
Unlike many darts the nose on these barrels is tapered. The taper on the nose is divided in two by a single ring that has been coloured black. Once the barrel reaches its full 7.2mm there are 3 main grip points. Centrally, is a fine ring grip arrangement, either side of the fine grip are two micro grip section that are both approximately the same size and also coloured black. The rear of the then barrel tapers away towards to meet the shaft at the rear, that’s it simple!
The shafts themselves are aluminium and have been re-machined to give the impression of a 3 piece assembled shafts similar to the Old Unicorn Jet Stems. The flights are themed with a Black Mamba snake, thus the name.
They are supplied in a black basic hard case like some other makers do. The base design of the barrels is similar in profile to many others, what is really evident is the finish or should i say finesse.
Let me just say there is nothing wrong with them, these are the ideal entry level tungsten darts, given there are so many choices to make, with the Elkadart selection of barrel designs newcomers to tungsten darts can easily afford a few trial sets to work with weight and barrel design.
I mean lets be honest on a few points here. Over the past few years we have seen many manufacturers reach the Apex of their craft, releasing designs and styles that are sensational in look and design not to mention price. It appears to me that Elkadart has used the KISS theory and kept the whole thing simple by not over thinking the product and that, for new comers is very important, because if the process is over complicated people just fall away from the sport.
Many players have become dart snobs or Brand fans choosing to play only with certain tungsten % or sticking to the usual super ornate or complex machined styles believing that with all the inbuilt technology it will make them play as well as the namesake designer or live up to the promotional hype at the point of release. I think that’s a truth most of us learn quickly.
So back to the point, playing with these was a bit of an effort at first, mainly due o the longer aluminium stems and having played with short stems for years. Swapping the supplied shafts for a set of short nylon shafts made all the difference.
At the board they fly just like any other set of well balance tungsten darts. The central ring grip providing the key grip point, although the dual micro grip gives plenty of surface to hold on to if you prefer a full length surface grip, they’re not a super aggressive grip style dart but the surface doesn’t slip at all, probably 2.5 out of 5 for the grip. I think overall a 3 out of 5 for the set as a whole would be fair. They are a very playable set of darts but would be a less fancied set because of their finish; as far as value for money goes they are on the top of the list.
