Jocky Wilson was one of those very special sportsmen who achieved an almost immortal status in their chosen sport.
The ‘Wee Man’s’ ability was incredible, a more natural dart player you could not find. But it was Jocky’s nature away from the oche that has forever endeared him to the hearts of the British public. Datadart Jocky Wilson 22 gram Darts - Legend - Originals - D1075
Monday, July 18th, 2022 - The Darts CollectorLet’s start getting back to the basics. I mean let’s face it brightly coloured, ornately machined darts aren’t necessarily going to improve your game, and on the contrary they’re likely to have the opposite effect because of the dramatic changes in the look and feel of your darts. There may be a positive change initially but, as you relax and go back to your usual style it usually all goes to hell in a handbasket.
For those too young to have seen him play Jocky Wilson was a player from 1978-1996 Having played in both the BDO and PDC, winning 2 World Championships on the way, his first in 1982 defeating John Lowe and again in 1989 defeating Eric Bristow. He had many tournament wins during his career, retiring from darts in 1995 and passing away in March 2012.
In 2022 the new World Seniors Darts Championship was launched. The names of Jocky Wilson, Eric Bristow, Leighton Rees and Andy Fordham all deceased former world Champions appear on the World Seniors Darts Championship Trophy.
The darts, well, they are replications of the ones that Jocky played with during his career.
A touch less than 48mm long and the 22g barrels are 6.4mm in diameter. They are parallel or pencil style barrels with 2 sets of seven square cut grooves front and rear of the barrel, separated by a smooth section between the grooves and finished with a shorter plain section on the rear. The centre plain section is laser engraved with the name Jocky so there is no doubt what they are. Fitted with black 26mm plain points the rings are coloured Blue and the barrel itself has a bright, shiny natural finish. The barrels are supplied with long white Datadart signature stems. The 100 micron flights feature the white on blue St Andrew cross and Jocky Wilson signature, a theme that is repeated between the blue on the barrel and the white of the shafts.
To be honest I don’t recall the length of the dart shafts Jocky used in the day so, I can’t comment on the authenticity of the look, I found them difficult to handle with long stems.
After a bit of tweaking they were great fun to play with. Using a short or in between length shaft made the biggest difference or improvement for my throw at least. Bearing in mind that back in the 1970s or 1980s there wasn’t so much focus on weight matching, but these are beautifully balanced and fly well when thrown appropriately. The grip on the barrels is around a 2 or 2.5 out of 5 but that said the Jocky Wilson Range is available in not only Original style but also Ghost Grip, Shark Grip and the Legend 95 a 95% Tungsten version that has some really interesting grooves machined front and rear.
So like they say in advertising, there’s a Jocky Wilson dart for most grip styles.
I enjoyed the darts, they were easy to throw straight out of the box, it was just a matter of shaft length, nothing tricky about the grip, grooves or machining style. The 90% versions are at a price point that’s hard to believe, and as far as performance or bang for your buck goes it’s a big yes! 4 out of 5 for me.
